Five-year old Dante heard yelling and screaming coming from the living room and the curious little green-eyed blonde went to investigate. He walked right into an out of control argument between his father and another man. The frightened child clung to his mother.
Then the unthinkable happened. Dante’s father pulled a gun from his shoulder holster and shot the man dead. His father was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison. Dante’s mother was left alone to raise five-year old Dante and his two-year old sister. Self employment and single parenthood would be the fate of Dante's mother. She had to quickly learn how to run the family business in order to support her family.
When Dante was 7 his mom began dating Stan. Dante really liked Stan and looked up to him. Stan paid a lot of attention to Dante and was a positive role model and mentor. This relationship would be cut short when Stan was also shot and killed within six months of coming into the little boy’s life.
Dante’s mother remarried when Dante was 12 years old. Although the new step father tried to connect with him, Dante wanted nothing to do with him. Dante had already suffered too many losses and was not about to take the chance of getting close to someone else who might leave again without warning.
The home situation was spiraling out of control and Dante refused to try and get along with his step father or follow any rules set by his parents. Due to his rebellious behavior, he found himself homeless at the young age of 14. The teen found shelter with a friend and his parents dropped out of school in the 9th grade and landed a job in construction.
After working for 4 months, Dante had saved enough money to rent his own apartment for $500.00 a month. A caring leasing agent ignored Dante’s young age and rented him the apartment. Money was tight even with his construction job and Dante soon began stealing for food and other necessities and was soon arrested. Dante’s Mom was there to bail him out.
Mom convinced Dante to move back in with the family. The rebellious teen refused to go to school and began sneaking out after his step father had gone to bed and would return home after his step father left for work the next morning.
Dante admits that his mom tried her best to get her son back on the right track and hired him to work in the family business. Dante worked there for a short time and then returned to his life as a petty thief. He began stalking movie theaters for victims and would rob movie goers as they exited the movie theater.
Finally, at the age of 15, his crime spree came to an abrupt halt when he was arrested again. He was found guilty of robbery and was now a convicted felon. The judge decided to give Dante a break due to his young age and gave him a choice of jail or to join the navy. Dante finally made a good choice and joined the navy his mother signed the papers and Dante celebrated his 16th birthday in jail.
In the Navy, Dante soon became quite the hustler. He quickly learned that while on shore at the navy base he could make a lot more money at his part time jobs as a night club bartender and security guard. . He paid his navy buddies to complete his jobs on the ship for a price while he worked at his more lucrative part-time jobs.
After two years in the navy at age 18 Dante received an honorable discharge. Within three weeks after being discharged, Dante was arrested and charged with 13 felonies and was sentenced to 17 months in prison. This time there was no sympathetic judge and Dante soon found himself behind bars.
Once released from prison, Dante went to live with his cousin and got a job with a metals company but admits he was still “running with gangs and breaking the law.” His crime spree was again interrupted when Dante was injured at work and was unable to work for one year. He received just $15,000 for his injuries but it was a new start for him.
His first chance at a legitimate self employment opportunity came in an unexpected way. A neighbor called Dante for help after being robbed at gun point. He wanted Dante to ask around to see if he could find the perpetrator. Dante agreed to do this provided that the neighbor who owned a beeper and cellular phone business agreed to teach him how to get started in the same business.
Dante found the thief and quickly ducked tapped his hands, feet and mouth, put him in the trunk of his car, and promptly delivered the thief to his neighbor’s place of business. Dante was proud of his accomplishment and with great pride he opened the trunk of his car displaying his catch to his new mentor. The horrified business owner thanked Dante for his prompt service but even though he was very grateful this method was not exactly what he had in mind when he said to ask around. The police were then called and the thief was arrested.
The neighbor kept his promise and soon Dante opened up his own beeper and cell phone business from his home. After a few months of self employment he had made enough money to move out of the house and rent space in the corner of a video store. Within a year the video store owner moved out and Dante’s business was going so well that he decided to take over the entire movie store space and opened his first cell phone store.
This was a turning point for Dante. He worked hard non-stop, took a few risks and made some mistakes along the way but never gave up. His store was a success. This gave him the confidence he needed to stay on the right path. Dante had no family money or no bank loan to start his own business. Dante did have the desire to change his life and the willingness to work hard, be persistent, and never give up.
Dante got married at age 27 in the delivery room after the birth of his son when his girlfriend refused to put his name on the birth certificate unless he married her. Not surprisingly the marriage did not work out, however, Dante’s son, now 12 years old, lives with Dante. He is very close to his son and encourages his son to excel in school and sports. Dante missed having a father figure himself and works hard be the best role model he can be for his son.
Today after much determination and hard work Dante owns a string of cell phone businesses and has an impressive inventory of real estate. He lives in a half a million dollar house and has all the “toys” he dreamed of having as a child. His garage and driveway are packed with expensive cars.
Dante now 40 agrees that he is successful in business and has accumulated more that most people will in a life time. Although he has made a great deal of money and is able to a live a life style most people only dream of living, he admits that he has made many mistakes in life but has learned from them.
So what is Dante’s secret to success: “Be honest, be willing to take educated risks, work hard, and do your homework before opening a business.”
